UNL's Ashley Rutland wins scholarship for study in Japan

2014 Apr 18

University of Nebraska-Lincoln student Ashley Rutland has won a $1,000 Christian Lieding Scholarship for her overseas study in visual communication to Japan this summer.

The Christian Lieding Scholarship and Fellowship Program is intended to encourage academic/educational exchanges between UNL and foreign educational institutions. It funds tuition, fees, travel or living expenses.

The junior from Nebraska City majors in advertising and public relations. Rutland's honors include making the Dean's List and receiving two College of Journalism and Mass Communications scholarships -- the Kinman Oldfield Scholarship and the Lori Sweet Scholarship. In addition, she received the Nebraska City News-Press Scholarship.

The scholarship was made possible by more than $4 million by the estate of Harold Lieding, a UNL graduate who passionately believed in the value of study abroad. The endowment, announced in 2004, funds the program in memory of Lieding's late son, Christian.

Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.25 and be enrolled full time at UNL to qualify.
