Tyler Matson of Springfield earns Gilman scholarship to study abroad

2017 Nov 28

Tyler Matson of Springfield is among 13 University of Nebraska-Lincoln students who earned Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships, which will enable them to study abroad during the spring 2018 semester.

Matson, a sophomore political science and global studies major, will study in Russia. He is the son of Kara Matson.

The Gilman scholarship is a nationally competitive award given three times a year by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. This round of scholarships was awarded to about 1,200 students from 354 universities and colleges.

Gilman scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad or internship program costs. Matson received an additional $3,000 as he will study critical languages while abroad.

The program's goal is to allow students to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages and economies - making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector.
