2012 Oct 26

Connor Kilmurray of Sidney was among more than 1,200 Nebraska high school graduates in 2012 who were awarded scholarships to attend UNL.

The awards include 29 Chancellor's Scholarships, 367 Regents Scholarships (including 106 Nebraska Top Scholars), 84 Nebraska Achievement Scholarships, 69 David Distinguished Scholarships, 641 James H. Canfield Scholarships, 81 Chancellor's Leadership Class scholarships and 351 University Honors Program textbook scholarships.

The total value of the scholarships is more than $14.5 million.

Kilmurray, a graduate of Sidney High School, was awarded the James Canfield Scholarship and Chancellor's Leadership Award and is enrolled in the College of Business Administration.

Chancellor's and Regents scholarships are among the most prestigious awards granted by the university. Chancellor's Scholarships pay tuition for full-time students for four academic years, while Regents Scholarships pay tuition for up to 120 credit hours or the completion of a bachelor's degree, whichever comes first. Each scholarship has an equivalent cash value of approximately $27,900. Funded in part by the Cooper Foundation, Chancellor's Scholarships also provide $2,000 in additional scholarships support for four academic years.

The students who were selected as Nebraska Top Scholars will receive at least $1,500 per year in scholarship awards beyond their Regents Scholarship awards from UNL or the University of Nebraska Foundation, provided they meet renewal criteria each year.

Nebraska Achievement Scholarships are based on academic achievement, admission test scores and information in the student's personal statement. Twenty-three of the scholarships are for tuition for up to 120 hours with the other 61 offering $1,000 per year. The scholarships are renewable for up to four years provided continuing eligibility conditions are met.

David Distinguished Scholar awards offer full-time students $1,000 annually for up to four years if they meet renewal requirements. David Distinguished Scholarships are funded from a trust established in 1973 by the late Adrian H. David, a Minneapolis attorney, in honor of his parents. Adrian David was a 1908 graduate of the NU College of Law. The trust also funds faculty research projects, placing a special emphasis on cancer research.

Canfield Scholarships, named for the chancellor who led the University of Nebraska to a position of national prominence in the 1890s, offer full-time students a one-year award of $1,000.

Members of the Chancellor's Leadership Class are awarded one-year scholarships of $1,000. The award was created to recognize and reward students who have excelled both academically and in leadership roles in school and community activities. Members must be full-time students and participate in scheduled Chancellor's Leadership Class activities.

Pepsi Scholarships are one-year, $1,000 scholarships to full-time students who participate in scheduled weekly leadership development seminars that focus on volunteer service. The award recognizes students who understand the importance of volunteerism and have demonstrated leadership and dedication in working to improve their communities.

Students admitted to the University Honors Program receive book scholarships that provide up to $500 per year.

An individual student can qualify for one Chancellor's, Regents, Nebraska Achievement, David Distinguished or Canfield scholarship. Chancellor's Leadership Class and Honors Program book scholarships may be combined with other awards.
